About us

A short historical account for the developments of the institute…

The activity of electron microscopy and micro characterization in our university dated back to early 1990s, when Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Horst P. Strunk started the Chair of Micro-characterization (WW7). After his retirement in 2005, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Erdmann Spiecker restarted the electron microscopy activity, and initiated the Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM) in the end of 2007. Well integrated within the materials science department, the group continuously grow up over the last years. In 30.April.2015, the brand new chair „Institute of Micro- and Nanostructure Research“ (WW9) was officially founded. We are a dynamic and vigorous team, performing cutting-edge research with a focus on in-situ microscoy for the study of a broad spectrum of materials. Hosting the state-of-the-art facilities, we also offer attractive study modules and opportunities for practices and thesis work to students who are interested in the field.
